Many sites sold for guest posts look strong on paper and have almost no readers. These six checks take a few minutes and save a lot of wasted budget.
1. Look at the traffic trend, not one number
In Ahrefs or Semrush, open the organic traffic graph for the last two years. A steady or rising line is good. A sharp spike followed by a crash often means a Google update hit the site.
2. Check where the traffic comes from
If you are targeting the US, most of the site’s visitors should be in the US. Traffic mainly from countries the site never writes about is a red flag.
3. See which pages bring the visitors
Real sites get traffic from many articles. If one or two pages bring almost everything, the rest of the site, including your future post, may get no readers at all.
4. Read the latest posts
Open five recent articles. Are they written for people, with a clear topic? Or are they thin posts stuffed with outbound links to unrelated businesses?
5. Count the outbound links
A site that links out to dozens of sellers in every post is selling links in bulk. Search engines notice that pattern.
6. Ask for proof
A serious site owner can share a screenshot or read-only access to Google Search Console. If they refuse every kind of proof, move on.
Bottom line
Real traffic, a steady trend, the right country and a clean outbound link profile matter far more than a high Domain Rating.
