SEO Audit Checklist: What to Fix Before You Build Links

Links work best on a healthy site. Check these technical and on-page basics first so every link you buy can do its job.

Links help a page rank, but they cannot fix a page Google struggles to crawl, load or understand. Run through this checklist before you spend on link building.

Indexing

  • Your important pages appear in Google Search Console under Pages as indexed.
  • No key page carries a noindex tag by mistake.
  • Your XML sitemap lists only pages you want in search.

Speed and mobile

  • Core Web Vitals in Search Console show mostly good URLs.
  • Images are compressed and sized for the screen.
  • Text is readable on a phone without zooming.

On-page basics

  • Each page has one clear H1 and a unique title tag.
  • Meta descriptions explain what the page offers.
  • The page answers the main question near the top.

Link to your money pages from related articles with clear anchor text. Internal links spread the value of every backlink you earn.

Content gaps

Compare your page with the top three results. If they cover pricing, examples or FAQs that you skip, add them. A thin page with great links still loses to a complete page.

Once the basics are fixed, links go to work faster, and you can measure their effect without technical problems muddying the results.
